See below for more information on these therapies.

Therapeutic Massage also known as Remedial or Deep Tissue Massage:   Generally techniques are applied deeper into the soft tissues (muscle, tendons and ligaments) in order to have a therapeutic effect on the body, and to address specific chronic muscular pain and postural dysfunction.Therapeutic massage is applied to injury rehabilitation, chronic conditions such as muscular spasm caused by anxiety, stress and more and may reduce inflammation
related pain.
The massage techniques may include deep longitudinal strokes (deep effleurage), kneading (petrissage), friction, vibration and percussion (tapotement), myofascial release, trigger point therapy, to name but a few.
Generally practitioners will have a diploma in therapeutic massage.

Swedish Massage (& Relaxation Massage) Today we refer to most “standard” massage as Swedish massage or sometimes as “relaxation massage” and the stroke names of “effleurage, petrissage, friction and tapotement” have become associated with the basic techniques.  Swedish does not go very deep, can be for a full body massage including scalp.

Neuromuscular Therapy - NMT is based on balancing the nervous system with the muscular system and searches for the underlying causes of long standing pain. The treatment begins with a thorough case history generally followed by a postural analysis, muscle length testing and tissue palpation. The treatments aim to release muscle spasm and eliminate Trigger Points, which can cause referred pain. This can bring back flexibility and improve the strength of muscles. It is beneficial for the treatment of many painful dysfunctions including headache, OOS, chronic back pain, jaw and neck pain.
Included within Neuromuscular Therapy is Trigger Point Therapy.

~

Trigger Point Therapy (TP's) is based on the extensive works of Dr Janet Travell and Dr David Simons. Trigger Point Therapy involves a systematic de-activation of hyperactive trigger points which are tight bands or nodules in the muscles, tendons or ligaments which cause pain and also refer pain to other areas.  Sometimes people refer to these areas as 'muscle knots' being an area of protection which has become more dysfunctional over time.

It is often TP's which stop your muscles from relaxing even when you are resting specifically to relax - your body just cant relax!

So you can see that releasing these triggers can result in a lot of relief.  The treatment may be followed by stretches with ice, followed by heat and then movement. Trigger point work is often a part of Neuromuscular Therapy and is beneficial wherever chronic, aching pain is felt.
Frequently trigger points cause symptoms in another area (referred symptoms), e.g. trigger points in your shoulders can cause headaches.

Gerontology Massage (Massage for Elders, including the terminally ill) Massage can help alleviate the isolation and loneliness many Elder people feel. It can revitalise a bond with others and re-affirm self-esteem. Gentle massage and range of motion techniques can increase circulation, mobilise the joints and improve skin condition. It may also lower blood pressure, reduce oedema and relieve tension headaches.
Massage for the elder population uses particular techniques and positioning for maximum comfort, safety, and effectiveness.
When combined with Craniosacral Therapy the cerebrospinal fluid circulation is also improved which helps the brains environment to normalise.

Benefits include:
Increased systemic circulation, promoting the removal of accumulated tissue fluids due to immobility or circulatory disorders.
Stimulates blood circulation for better nourishment of skin enhancing tissue repair
Boosts immune system
Reduces stress and fatigue
Decreases pain
Increases mobility, decreases risk of falls by improving proprioceptive nerve feedback thus improving balance and mobility, emphasizes caring and concern - decreasing anxiety and isolation and depression

Aromatherapy uses the Essential Oils extracted from plant material including resins and roots to help heal the psyche, tissues and organs of the body.  Oils are chosen for their chemical constituents.  I incorporate Aromatherapy into massage therapy. I also use Aromatherapy as a separate tool in topical creams such as Varicose Vein cream and nutritious Face Creams tailored to your personal needs.
